i just finished readingMere Christianity for the first time ever, despite the fact that I have been intending to read it for almost two decades now. It isn't the kind of book that can be finished in a short amount of time, which is how I tend to read books.
It has only been recently that I have finally figured out out that I could read a little bit every day and finish the book over the course of a month. I know that most of you are thinking, well duh. But this is a new skill for me. I tend to read books quickly, lest I forget something important in the beginning before I get to the ending. Big picture ideas are more appealing to me than details, so I read quickly, let the big picture form, and then the details fall to the wayside. The heart of Mere Christianity is in the details though. There are short sentences and apt metaphors that make you stop and dwell awhile on a particular truth about Christianity before moving on to the next thing. In the very last paragraph, I finally got the big picture of Mere Christianity. Seek Jesus and everything else falls into place. Self help books, social reform, perfect homes, impeccable organization, and the like are unnecessary if we can take our eyes off of ourselves and direct them to Jesus because when we find Him, we finally figure out who we are. And then everything finally makes sense.
